Tattoo Care Guide: Ensuring Your Ink Lasts a Lifetime

We believe that the journey of tattooing extends far beyond the final stroke of ink. To truly honour the artistry, the skin must be prepared before the session, supported through healing, and maintained long after the tattoo is finished. Our approach is built on a deeper understanding of how skin behaves at every stage. Each client receives tailored guidance to optimise healing, preserve pigment, and ensure the longevity of their artwork.

Below, we outline the essential care process we recommend.

Before Your Tattoo, Prepare Stage.

The process starts before you even sit in the chair. The condition of your skin directly affects how well it takes ink, how smoothly the tattoo is applied, and how it heals afterwards. In the days leading up to your appointment, focus on hydration, sleep, and overall skin health. Avoid sun exposure, alcohol, and anything that may irritate or thin the skin.

Using a preparation product like PRIME from SKINGRAPHICA 21 days before your session starts helps condition the skin, improving needle glide and allowing for more even pigment placement. Well-prepared skin creates a cleaner result and sets the foundation for better healing.

Immediately After Your Tattoo, Recovery Stage.

Keep it Covered:

After your tattoo is completed, your artist will apply a protective covering like a second skin. Keep this on for the recommended time to protect the area from bacteria and external irritation while the healing begins. Keep this on for 24-48h.

Avoid Soaking:

For the first 48 hours, avoid soaking your tattoo. No baths, swimming, or saunas. Keep showers brief and avoid direct, high-pressure water on the tattooed area.

Initial Healing, Days 1–7.

Gentle Washing:

Once the covering is removed, gently cleanse the tattoo using lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Always use clean hands. Pat dry and never rub.

Controlled Moisture:

Apply a thin, breathable layer of LOCK Recovery Complex. The goal is to support the skin without suffocating it. A balanced environment helps the skin recover and stabilise the pigment. Using a dedicated recovery product like LOCK during this stage helps support the healing process and assists in retaining pigment where it belongs. Using this more heavily in the beginning 4-6 times daily and slowly decrease it to 3-4 times is the best approach to get the tattoo fully recovered as fast as possible.

Avoid Picking or Scratching:

Itching and peeling are still normal. Do not pick or scratch, as this can damage the tattoo and affect the final result.

Mid-Healing (Days 7–14), Stabilisation Phase

Maintain Skin Balance:

Continue applying a light layer of LOCK 2–3 times per day. The skin is now rebuilding and settling the ink into place.

Monitor the Healing Process:

It’s normal for tattoos to appear slightly dull or cloudy during this stage. This is part of the natural healing process. If you notice anything unusual, seek professional advice.

Long-Term Care, After 2 Weeks

Daily Protection:

Once healed, your tattoo enters its longest phase. UV exposure is the main cause of fading, even through clothing. Applying a daily SPF-based product like SKINGRAPHICA’s SHIELD helps protect clarity, contrast, and depth over time.

Skin Conditioning:

Healthy skin is what makes a tattoo look sharp. Using a product like SHIELD daily helps protect against fading while enhancing contrast, depth, and overall clarity. By conditioning the skin and improving how it reflects light, your tattoo continues to look crisp and defined as it ages.

Touch-Ups & Longevity:

With the right preparation, healing, and maintenance, the need for touch-ups is significantly reduced. Your tattoo is built to last and proper care ensures it stays that way.
